Things to know when buying a silk quilt

Buying a mulberry silk inner can be complex. As you do your research you will hear all sorts of things about weights, fibres, grades of silk etc all of which will influence quality and price. So – just a few basics. The weight of the fibre is important as this will influence the warmth and insulating qualities of your quilt. Standard weights are usually
200gms or summer weight
400gms known as an all-season weight, depending on the heating method in your home
600gms which is a winter weight
A 200gm & 400gm can be attached together to make a winter weight quilt
Our quilts are all 400gm which is a good weight that can be used year round.
GRADE & LENGTH OF FIBRE
The making of a long-fibre mulberry silk quilt is a very labour intensive process, requiring each silk cocoon to be stretched by hand and then layered one upon another until the correct weight is reached. The silk fibre is then hand stitched to the outer casing. A quality quilt does not usually require box stitching as once attached the long fibre should not move – at Natural Origins our designers decided to have our quilts box stitched as well for added strength and stability.
